Ralf had all the gear, a couple fresh knee’s that were replaced, and just needed some guidance to teach him the delicate nature of catching fish on the fly fishing rod. We picked up a tag-along at the last minute, son Eric, who never handled a fly rod before. A beginner without any experience can make an excellent student, as Eric listened, watched, and learned. When time for his turn he was ready, and landed a fish on his first cast. He continued the catching all morning long. We fished the Viestenz-Smith Park first thing in the morning and made our way up above Idlewild Dam to finish the day by noon. Fish were very active in the fast riffle and pocket water. Fly choices of the day were Pat’s Rubber leg stone fly and the mercury bead RS2.
