Team Iowa came through with a strong showing. We decided to catch big fish to start and end the day, and fish the Big Thompson in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, Ryan has the abilities to be a great fly fisherman, but I struggled as a guide to put him onto numbers of fish. What would normally work, nymph fishing in pockets, smaller runs, and deeper holes was not working at all on the Big T. We dry fly fished for a little while and should have stuck with that because the fish were right up on the bank in shallow riffle water. The dry flies the fish wanted were small foam ants and small royal wolf….size 18 and 20 – which are difficult to see. It was a tough day on the Big T, but we made due by keeping on the move, seeing a lot a beautiful places, looking for active fish, and catching fish in every location.
Water Temp was 64 degrees at Road to NoWhere. Prince Nymph was most successful.
