8/2 Rob, Jack and Olivia in no particular order…Olivia

I had a great time with some Omaha, Nebraska folk.  Rob is an all-in type of guy, and I can appreciate that.  He wanted to learn “The River Run’s Through It” cast within his first 5 seconds of holding a fly rod.  We started off at the pond and both Jack and Olivia got a hit within the first 15 minutes of having there line in the water, unfortunately they were both looking at the beautiful scenery and were unable to set the hook.  We moved onto another pond that had some visually appealing fish, palamino genetically engineered trout.  We had success, everyone landed a fish, and we were onto our next challenge.  We went into Rocky Mountain National Park for some wild brook trout.   We took some casts, landed a couple brookies, and enjoyed the clear river and fresh air.  Rob asked to be excused for a solo wilderness exploration and he was dismissed with a stimulator dry fly and plenty of wild brook trout to catch.

One thing that I found interesting was the use of the term “Big Fish”.  When we were in the shop getting ready to leave, Rob said he wanted to catch big fish…we caught some big palamino’s.  An hour later we were catching 4 inch brook trout.  When we caught a 6 incher, the “big fish” term was used again, multiple times.  I find it satisfying to have a small wild brook trout become a person’s new big fish.

Chad, can’t tell you what a great time we had!! The kids will be talking about this for years and i’m already searching for someplace to fly fish near Omaha. I’ll tell any friend who wants to fly fish around Rocky Mountain National Park that you are the guy to see. Because you are the guy to see!

    • Rob,
Get out to any pond with some bluegills / brim and start there. Any kind of small dry fly will work. My first fish on the fly rod was a bluegill on a irresistible adams…I’ll never forget it.
