Today Lanny, a great father, brought his two daughters out for an afternoon of fly fishing. We were undecided at first about where we were going to start the day off, but then Lanny told me that these girls play hockey in Minnesota…enough said. We went right for the more difficult technical nymph fishing on the heavily pressured Big Thompson River. We were able to get a nice brown trout right away. I kept changing flies until we found the copper ribbed Rs2 was the fly that they wanted. We all were able to get the opportunity to land a fish on the river before we decided to go after some bigger trout.
At first I thought the lake wasn’t going to be productive for us, normally it’s only a couple of minutes before we see our first bite. It took a good 15 minutes and sure enough Rory put one in the net. I put Lanny in a new spot, changed his fly to what worked for Rory, and within 5 minutes he was on his first fish. The two kept taking turns catching fish for the next couple hours, landing a double at one point in time (pictured), while we leap-frogged around the lake. The name of the fly is called a birds nest, but it wasn’t working on Hunter’s rig for unknown reasons, so we changed it up. A storm was rolling in, cloud cover with some wind, fish were starting to rise on the surface; so we tied on a big chernobyl ant dry fly and made a cast to some cruising fish. The water erupted like someone thru a cinder block in the lake, and Hunter was on a fish. We got it to the net and caught 3 more fish on the dry fly, extending the day a little, but who could resist big fish on a dry fly.
Hey Chad,
I wanted to thank you again for the amazing trip on the Big T! We all had a blast and learned a ton from you. My daughters experienced some amazing fishing/scenery and I really cherished being able to watch them have success; cathing their first ever trout on a fly rod. I had fun cathing some fish too!
A special huge thanks goes out to my wife Sarah for setting this up as a Father’s Day gift. As usual, she knocked it our of the park.
I hope we can go on a trip again sometime. If you are ever in Minnesota, look me up. Thanks again Chad!
Thanks Lanny,
It means a lot to me to hear positive feedback. As you can see by the blog, I stay busy, but rarely do I get to hear about how great it was, or the impact I made.
Thank you,
Chad
