Jack and Gill have been coming to Alaska Wilderness Outfitting since 1992, when the lodge was a couple of tents, some camp fires, and living with the bears. I asked Jack about how the Tsiu River had changed over the years, as I had seen the river change it’s main channel current within the last week. He was telling me about how the river was in a completely different area, that there was a lot more riverfront back in the day, and that now it’s starting to cut into the sand dunes. As we were talking the kitchen started playing music through my walkie-talkie, and now we had pandora playing on a river in the middle of nowhere Alaska. I thought to myself, how embarrassing that I come from a generation of people that need constant stimulation. I asked Jack if he ever had music available when he was out here. He said no, then walked over to the water with his fishing pole, made a cast, and hooked into another salmon.
Gill is a diehard fisherman. He tried to tell me that the fishing wasn’t as good as it used to be, but the morning after he said that, he caught 5 fish in a row to start the day. The limit is only 4 fish. He had his limit in 4 casts. Then the whole rest of the day was catch and release.
