Gary had one goal when fishing with me, and that was to learn how to fish high flows. The Big Thompson below Lake Estes was only 125 cfs but the upper Thompson coming into Lake Estes was at 600 cfs, so we decided to fish from the visitor center up into town. This stretch is not know to be a great fishing spot and has likely a fish count of 1000 fish per mile compared to the lower Thompson that has about 3000 fish per mile, but we made it work and caught some nice fish.
The fly of choice was a san juan worm, as it is for most of my high water situations. One great thing about fishing high water is that the fish fight much harder as they use the extra current against the fly rod. As we moved up into town it was more tough to get into a regular catch. We caught a couple small browns and ran out of time before making are way all the way up through town.
